Introduction

If you've ever experienced an issue with your Google Chrome and had to have it reset by an ICT Helpdesk Advisor or something else has gone wrong with your system, resulting in a loss of all your Google Chrome bookmarks, it's very frustrating and results in you painfully having to put them all back one by one. This short article will guide you to backing up your bookmarks as a precautionary measure in case it ever happens again and you need a fast way to recover your links to various websites.

For those of you wondering if you can use a personal or work account to sync your bookmarks with your profile, along with passwords and other login credentials, please DO NOT do this as it presents security concerns with storing sensitive information outside of our Microsoft environment. Although it's very convenient, it's not secure and presents a security risk. Please do not sign in to any Google accounts on your Chrome browser.

Backup Bookmarks

  • Once all your bookmarks are in place and you're happy to make a backup, open Chrome
  • Click on the three dots at the top right of the open window
  • Select Bookmarks to display a small popout menu and then click on Bookmark Manager
  • This will open a new window up where you can now click on the three dots on the blue strip also at the top right
  • Click Export Bookmarks

  • You should now be presented with a window asking you where to save them
  • Give it a name or stick with the default and I recommend you save the file in your OneDrive
  • Click Save
  • Next time you need to recover your bookmarks, go through the same methods above but instead click Import Bookmarks
  • That will allow you to find and open the file you saved, restoring all your favourite links
